This past saturday Hekx, Malatesta, Static and Myself went and ate at Kobe Sushi in Salt Lake City. Hekx enjoys spicy food and wanted to try the hellfire challenge as seen on the Man vs. Food tv show. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fwI-58nZ8A). Below is his story.

—-

It went very well, I daringly entered the challenge and passed all qualifying rounds (hah, more of a joke, they were not hot). Then they bring out what they referred to as level 6.5. (It was nothing, I spat in the general direction of the chef, for disrespecting me enough to call 6.5 a challenge. Then they brought at level 7, the final level of this “Hellfire Challenge” we’ve all heard so much about. There was even a sparkler, on the plate, somehow signifying that this was intense.

I stared at the level 7 (I needed to eat 6, and they bring them out 2 at a time) for just a moment, as Mala readied his camera to capture my transcending from simple customer to champion. Once it was ready I quickly shoved both pieces into my mouth and started chewing.

They were so god damn hot, I had and issue getting them down, but did. It was then required that I sit there and I could not leave or the challenge was over. My entire mouth was on fire and I could not bare it, I ran outside and could not get a breath of air no matter how much I tried. It was so hot I couldn’t speak and was pacing back and forth like a madman. The veins in my forehead imploded, my eyes turned bloodshot and one side of my face swelled up.

Justin ran to go get me milk, and I managed to text him the worse “Ice Cream”. It seemed forever before he got back, and as I sat in the shade against the car bystanders continued to ask me worriedly if I was okay. I assured them that I was fine and even explained the story to them. Finally Justin returned, bring 12, individual snack packs of ice cream. I ate all but 2 of them.

Finally the burn in my mouth and face subsided and the rest of the crew, finished their meals and met me outside. We traveled across SLC to the REI where we had met at the start of the day. I was joking with them and we were convinced to try and get someone else to do the challenge.

As we walked into REI, I mentioned to static that my gut was starting to ache, and jokingly suggested that phase 2 of the challenge was beginning. By the time we reached the footwear section of REI, the pain in my stomach intensified. I tried to hold it in, but couldn’t bare it any longer and laid down on the bench where people try on shoes. Yet the pain just got strong and stronger. It was like I had shards of glass trying to digest and easily the most painful thing I have ever experience in my life. It clouded my vision, bubbled my hearing and made me very dizzy.

I sat up from the bench and walked very quickly to the bathroom, where I was met with painful dry heaves that nearly knocked the wind out of me. I had to do something so I shoved my finger down my throat and forced myself to vomit. What came out was bright orange and burnt my throat, sinus, nose and mouth. It knocked me on my knees and I puke again and again. The pain in my stomach had them seemed to subside so I went to the sink and splashed cold water on my burning face. Then suddenly the pain returned, as intense as ever and I went into the stall again and vomited repetitively. I knew that I could not stay in there long as REI was closing so I got myself up and walked outside and met up with static mala and scorchen.

They looked at me slightly concerned but did not appear all that worried. I explained to them the situation and pain, and malatesta led me over to the side of REI, in an alley where again the pain struck I was knocked to my knees from it and vomited repitively. intensely burning me over and over. He walked away figuring that I just needed to get it out of me and also because he probably didn’t enjoy being so nearby as I puked. I got up again and walked over to them in front of the store, and then it came back and I had to return to the alley for another painful puking session. This time mala went to go and get me antacid and pepto bismo, and in an effort to make light of the situation I jokingly said “Im scared”.

As he left I got back up and started walking to static, but the pain again cripped me half way back and I stopped and vomited in the parking lot, I knew I needed something for my throat because this was destroying me, nearby I saw a wendy’s and thought I should get a frosty so It soothes this burning and at least I am throwing something up.

I started walking towards the wendy’s, but was stopped short by more aching and pain and vomit. After each puking session I would have a short brief moment that was virtually pain free. After this one I took advantage of that moment and walked quickly to wendy’s. I looked like shit my face was bright red and my eyes as well. When I got into wendy’s there was a couple in front of me so I went into the bathroom rather than wait and splashed cold water on my face and drank out of the sink.

I went out and they were done ordering and I stepped up to the counter. The guy takes what seemed like forever to come and take my order and the pain was building. Finally he stops by and I say “I just took a spicy food challenge” (so they knew I just wasnt on drugs or something) “and I need a frosty please”. Each moment that passes the pain is growing, the worse pain I have ever felt. He then asks me what flavor, and I respond “I don’t care” then he asks me if I want the “99 cent one or the other one” and I said the 99 cent one and threw a dollar on the counter. He then typed it in and said “I need 7 cents” and I looked at him and whipped out a five and threw it on the counter and said “Just get me the fucking frosty.”.

He sensed the urgency from my comment, and the face that I was now bent over the counter. He went and grabbed the frost then came back and coutned the change. It seemed again like he was taking forever but finally he handed my change which I dropped, and a kid in the store picked up. I told him to just keep it and ran out the door.

This is where the pain reached its peak, I could not take another step, it hurt so god damn bad it knocked onto my knees and onto the sidewalk in front of wendy’s I began vomiting violenty in the bushes. At this point static and scorch see me collapse in front of the door at wendy’s and start to come over. I try to take a bite of the frosty but am in to much pain and drop it as I fall onto my chest and lie face first in my puke, sweat and drool on the sidewalk. All I can do at this point is shake and vomit, the pain has made me so dizzy and weak that I can’t move. scorch and static debate whether they should call an ambulance or not and scorchen runs inside to grab me water and ice. He brings it out and its all I can do to grab it from him and poor it over my head. I then lift up my shirt and lie on the side walk, trying to absorb in cooling affect it has to offer. I can’t even think at this point, everything was so blurry I don’t even remember all that static and scorchen said. I know that mala eventually showed up surprised at how much worse the situation had gotten.

They knew I had to get off of wendy’s sidewalk so after several minutes collapsed on the sidewalk they helped me situp and I took antacid and tums, and they led me back over to the alleyway, where again the pain hit me and I collapsed after puking pepto and antacid. I couldn’t even think rationale anymore I just wanted the pain to stop, and it would for a timespan of around 1 minute. In this minute, I tried to make light of the situation, just imagining how concerned they must be. I would talk it over with them about “how the pain is going to return, and its going to hurt so bad”. They sat with me and delivered me water as I splashed it onto my face, provided very temporary relief.

Although the puking and pain would go on for probably another hour and half in this parking lot and the pain another few hours after we had left. The most intense part had past, the climax was no doubt what I felt coming out of wendy’s.

At this moment, one of my eyes is red from broken blood vessels that occurred during my vomiting session. I still feel like shit but things are getting better. So, to the geekahertz community, I formally recommend that you never ever try the hellfire challenge.

Just when you thought manufacturers couldn’t cram any more technology into a vehicle, CES rolls throughLas Vegas to show off all-new levels of car-bound gadgetry. A company by the name of Rydeen hopes to produce a new range of stereo head units that run the Android operating system. The double-DIN units partner up with a touch-screen enabled rear-view mirror serve up all of the relevant applications we’ve come to know and love from our Android devices. Currently, Rydeen says it’s just using the touchscreen rear-view mirrors as research tools, though a production version may hit the market by 2013.

That version will likely boast a more simple interface that should be easier for drivers to use without killing everyone else on the road. We’re big fans of that plan, though we have to wonder about the viability of putting the touch screen in the rear-view mirror to begin with. Here’s hoping Rydeen will turn to a traditional dash-mounted system in the future. Hit the jump to check out a video of the mirror for yourself.
